Purpose is something all humans seek, especially after the advent of the Industrial Revolution. What a switch it has been – from early humans around 10,000 BC hunting, foraging, running from big cats & bears. To the steam engines & Industrial Revolution in the 18th & 19th century. To the PC & digital revolution of the current millennia. I wonder how our purpose as humans has evolved.
As early humans, all we cared about was survival & procreation. Now, we have the opportunity to expand just beyond that & seek something more… something like Purpose.
The automation around us, the evolution of AI (Artificial Intelligence), the AI fear mongering constantly around us is only going to push us in the direction of finding our purpose, our meaning – our reason for existing.
Humans are social creatures by nature. We want to belong & feel connected. Yet, the digital world is sometimes responsible for disconnecting us from our friends and also disconnecting us from ourselves.
Your purpose may once have been to write software programs to combat fraud, – a noble endeavor. Well, AI is going to take over that job soon. So how will you find a new purpose? Your purpose may be closely tied to your job, especially in America where work is everything! Sometimes it’s hard to separate your identity & purpose from what you do.
When AI arrives & takes over some of these jobs, how are we going to redefine our purpose? After all, should purpose be rooted in something outside of work. Should it be based on your belief? your religion? your love for animals? or is it founded in simply finding yourself?
Whatever it is, I know the transition is scary.
I know the AI emergence is terrifying. But I learned to trust myself.
I think being aware of emerging technologies around you is step number one. What you do with this awareness & this information is step number two.
Maybe you train yourself in these AI concepts to be future ready. Maybe you continue living your existing purpose & not care for the future so much.
You can also argue there is no such thing as purpose, we come & go and its all a cycle of evolution in the grand show called the Universe. You might as well smile & love & live life to the fullest.
It is with this reasoning, I realize that my purpose is to seek intrinsic joy through learning new skills, help others with my skill, take care of my body & mind, meet people, appreciate nature. and know that ALL will be okay.
What’s your purpose? Remember, if you don’t have one then you are actually lucky – because there is not just one thing that has to drive you.
Dinosaurs have lived on this earth for 160 million years, longer than humans have.
We have a long way to go. A way that I hope is positive, benevolent & accepting of all! So much so, that our purpose is just to live- fully.
Thoughts from my heart – Seek your adventure!
Alisha out.
