Feeling philosophical lately – I observe everything that happens to me and within me. Sounds scary, but reality is perceived from within oneself – so isn’t it that ourselves are the only reality we truly experience?
Anyway, I have been noticing things in nature carefully. One such simple observation came to me on a foggy morning. I woke up at half past 6 in the morning and looked through the window to see a foggy view of the trees. I wondered, how can anyone see in this thick dense fog, let alone drive? I realized that if I were to walk through this thick fog, I wouldn’t be able to see anything – but I was wrong!
The reality is, I can walk through the fog – I may not be able to see into the distance, but I can definitely see in front of me, directly at the ground below my feet and a few inches ahead. I realized that this is the only vantage point we all have in our lives, proverbially.
You can’t really see the future – you can predict it, but you can’t see it for the way it “is”. You can see the present for the way it “is” – after all, the present cannot be any other way than it is RIGHT NOW! Let that settle.
So just like the fog, your future is covered up – unknown and uncertain. But what you have right in front of you right now is the present, and my decision-making is only based on what I see in the present.
So any progress you make in this “fog-like” scenario called Life is slow. It’s like walking in a dark room with no lights – you take every step intentionally.
If I walked fast on a foggy street, odds are I might hit a rock, or a car, or fall off a cliff. That is the antithesis of progress – I would have to get up and walk again. But if I slow down and walk only on the path that I can see, I can make decisions along the way that will eventually chart the future for me. And in many ways, you are progressing towards where you want to go.
So next time you are stuck and feel like you are not making any progress, just stop and think – you are in the thick of progress. Just slow down and keep going! After all, we are all rushing toward the only eventuality that mortal humans have known… Get it? So what’s the point? Enjoy the journey.
I hope you love my existential content, ha! The more you know about yourself the more you feel empowered. I wanted to get my thoughts out and connect with you as a fellow human – feels good to be alive!
