How to Stop Overthinking – Practical Tools to Apply Today

Have you ever felt like you’re not good enough? That everyone else in the room is smarter than you? That you should just stay quiet because you’ll sound stupid if you speak up?

Lies!! Our brain tells us these things to “protect” us from a survival threat – a threat that doesn’t actually exist. There’s no need for fight or flight in most scenarios of your life. It’s safe. You ARE safe!

So why do we believe these lies? And more importantly, what can we do about it?

Action is the best antidote to Overthinking

I’ve had these thoughts and to this day, I still do!

Overthinking and overanalyzing every possible thing that can go wrong is a mindset we can change. And the easiest way to start? Action.

Taking action is the antidote to overthinking.

Here are three practical tools that have worked in my experience. You can start today:

1. Set Weekly Goals for the Next 30 Days

Pick small, achievable goals and write them down each week. Focus on actions that push you just slightly outside your comfort zone.

Example: If you tend to overthink speaking up in meetings, your weekly goal could be: “I will share at least one idea during team meeting this week.” Or, if anxiety holds you back, it could be: “I will start a conversation with one new person at the coffee shop each day.” Seeing your progress in real time like this makes overthinking lose its power!

2. Show Up Anyway

Whether it’s a meeting, a social event, or a project at work, commit to showing up, even if you feel anxious. Action is a natural confidence booster and will slowly rewire your brain to trust you over your fears.

Example: You’re invited to a networking event but your mind screams, “I’ll embarrass myself.” Go anyway. Arrive, introduce yourself to one person, and stay for at least 30 minutes. Each time you show up despite the fear, it becomes easier next time.

3. Rejoice in Completing Your Goals

At the end of each week, celebrate every goal you hit – does not matter how big or small. Acknowledge your effort, share your wins and be proud of yourself!

Example: If you spoke up in meetings three times this week or started a conversation with a stranger, take a moment to write it down. Rewarding yourself reinforces a positive mindset and rewires your brain to become more confident.

So, stay confident!

I love this!! This is so good!!! I always try to have at least one interaction or a communication with another person every day in the grocery store, or out and about. Even if it is to just say “Hi!! How are you today??” or “I hope your week/day is going well”. It helps me to refocus my “me” overthinking to think about another person.

    1. Thanks for your comment. That’s excellent what you are doing. It is indeed taking the excessive focus away from I, me , myself!
